Liposuction
(Lipoplasty)
Although surgery is no substitute for regular exercise and a healthy diet as a method of controlling weight, liposuction can be a safe and effective alternative for reducing pockets of fatty tissue that don't respond to other weight-control methods.
The basic method has been in use for some time and has proven to be effective for thousands of patients. In recent years, several variations have been developed. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages for specific patients; Dr. Sheng can help you determine which, if any, is best for you.
Dr. Sheng almost always uses general anesthesia for liposuction procedures, making it more comfortable for you. In some cases, the procedure might be performed using local anesthetic. Dr. Sheng will advise you of which is best for your case.
Generally, Dr. Sheng injects some fluid into the area to be recontoured; the injected fluid helps break loose the fat cells. Then a narrow tube is inserted, and a vacuum pump or large syringe is used to draw the loose fat from the body through the tube.
You'll be up and around in a day or two, and the doctor may encourage you to walk and move around to maintain your circulation. You'll notice a difference in the shape of your body soon after surgery, and even more as swelling subsides in the following weeks. In some cases, excessive skin might take a while to be reduced.
This has been only a general overview of liposuction surgery. To find out more, you should talk over the specifics of your case with Dr. Sheng. Simply call his office at (310) 288-0269 to make an appointment. He will be happy to take the time to make sure you are fully informed.
